Unicorns of Diving in Fiji: More Than a Dive Trip
Fiji delivered warm water, colorful reefs, and memorable diving. Yet one afternoon between dives created the story the Unicorns would carry home.
A Walk Into the Village Changed Everything
Sometimes the most meaningful part of a dive trip happens when the gear is off and you simply follow your curiosity.
During a quiet afternoon between dives, Unicorns of Diving member Keosha took a walk into a nearby Fijian village. She was soon surrounded by children full of energy, curiosity, and warmth.
A simple conversation eventually revealed something none of the group expected to hear.
A Team With Somewhere to Go
Keosha learned that the village had a girls’ handball team that had qualified for a tournament on a neighboring island.
The opportunity
The girls had earned a place in the tournament and were ready to compete.
The challenge
The team needed help covering the travel costs required to reach the neighboring island.
The response
Keosha brought the story back to the Unicorns, and the group responded at once.
No Committee Meeting. No Campaign. Just People Helping.
Members reached into their pockets and raised the full amount the girls needed within the hour.
The effort was not planned when the trip was organized, and it was not on the dive itinerary. It was simply an opportunity to help people the Unicorns had met, and the group responded.
The Village Had a Surprise of Its Own
The village responded by preparing a feast for the Unicorns. Massive pots went over open wood fires while women gathered to peel, chop, and stir as laughter and singing filled the gathering.
The Unicorns shared food and conversation with the village while experiencing a side of Fiji no dive itinerary could have scheduled.
Before leaving for the tournament, the girls gathered for a photo holding the Unicorns of Diving banner. The image captured what the trip had unexpectedly become.
The ocean brought us to Fiji.
The people gave us the story we’ll remember.
The Experiences Between the Dives
Destination diving can take us to extraordinary places. Travel also creates opportunities to meet people, learn about communities, and form connections that have nothing to do with depth, bottom time, or the number of dives in a logbook.
For the Unicorns, Fiji became one of those trips.
